1.  Memorial Day was born shortly after the Civil War, as soldiers and families honored those who lost their lives in the terrible battle.

2.  Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, because soldiers and their families traditionally decorated the graves of fall soldiers with wreaths, flowers, and flags.

3.  Before being moved to the last Monday in May to ensure long weekends, Memorial Day was observed on May 30th every year.

4.  Red poppies are traditionally the flowers used to symbolize and honor fallen soldiers.

5.  Southern States have separate holiday observances for "Confederate Memorial Day," where they honor the Confederate soldiers who lost their lives in the Civil War.

6.  Waterloo, New York is considered the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

7.  According to estimates by AAA, more than 36 million people across the United States will travel at least 50 miles from their homes on Memorial Day Weekend.

8.  There is actually a law that legally requires Americans to pause their activities at 3:00 PM on Memorial Day to honor fallen soldiers.

9.  Memorial Day was first observed on May 30th, 1868 by order of General John A. Logan.

10.  Memorial Day wasn't legally declared a holiday until 1968.
