Characteristics of Home Buyers
  • The average home buyer is 44 years old and has a median household income of $86,100.
  • 18% of homebuyers are veterans. 
  • 3% of homebuyers are active-duty service members.
  • 13% of buyers purchase multi-generational homes to care for aging parents, to save money, and/or to accommodate children over the age of 18 who were moving back home.
  • 67% of homebuyers are married couples.
  • 15% of buyers are single females.
  • 9% of buyers are single males.
  • 7% of buyers are unmarried couples.
  • The most popular reason people cite for buying a house is simply the desire to own a home of their own.


The Home Search Process
  • On average, buyers who use the internet look at 10 different homes over a 10-week period before choosing which home they wish to purchase.
  • Buyer who do not use the internet only spend an average of 5 weeks looking for homes and visit 5 different homes.
  • 42% of buyers begin the process by searching for homes online. Only 14% start the process by contacting a real estate agent.
  • Among buyers who use the internet to aid in their home search, 87% agreed that photos and 84% agree that detailed descriptions are very helpful.
  • 78% of buyers agree that their real estate agents are useful sources of information.
  • 82% of buyers agree that website are useful sources of information.
