7 Fun Halloween Traditions To Start With Your Family

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? Your family's unique traditions are probably high on the list. Traditions are an integral part of a family's culture. As adults with children of your own, it's time for you to continue the legacy by starting traditions in your own family.

In honor of the upcoming holiday, the team at Arrowhead Title thought we'd put together a list of some fun ideas for Halloween family traditions. Pumpkin carving and trick-or-treating aren't the only ways to celebrate this spooky holiday!

7 Ideas For Halloween Family Traditions

1. Watch Scary Movies
Even if you aren't a big fan of scary movies in general, you can always make an exception on Halloween! Choose a few family-friendly scary movies and snuggle up on the couch with your family. Don't forget the popcorn!

2. Give To Others
Teaching your kids the value of giving back to their community and the people they share it with is incredibly important (not to mention rewarding). There are several ways to give back with your kids on Halloween - you can trick-or-treat at a nursing home, bring gift baskets to children in the pediatric ward of your local hospital, or send your extra candy to our troops overseas. It's a great opportunity to make memories with your children while teaching them the value of charity!

3. Visit A Pumpkin Patch
Pumpkin patches are great fun for families. Young children love running through the pumpkins in search of the perfect one to take home, and parents love to take pictures of their little ones against the scenic fall backdrop. Pumpkin patches often also offer several other fall attractions, such as hay rides and autumn-related arts and crafts.

4. Camp Out In The Backyard
If your family enjoys outdoorsy activities, use Halloween night as an excuse to build a bonfire and camp out in the backyard. While you're at it, you can tell scary ghost stories and roast marshmallows - the perfect combination for spooky Halloween fun!

5. Devise A Clever Exchange Program
Some families have found a fun, clever way to help their kids avoid consuming too much sugar after going trick-or-treating by devising an exchange program. The idea is that the children leave out pieces of candy on Halloween night and "The Switch Witch" takes the candy, leaving a small gift in its place. Some parents use other entities such as "The Green Pumpkin" instead of The Switch Witch. Regardless, it can be a fun way to incentivize children not to eat all of their candy after trick-or-treating while adding to the fun and mystery of Halloween night.

6. Make Your Own Spooky Decorations
Most kids love a good craft project. Making Halloween decorations is the perfect opportunity to get crafty with your little ones (and save money on commercialized decorations while you're at it). Construction paper makes a great foundation for bats, pumpkins, cats, owls, and countless other Halloween symbols, and tissue paper cinched around a sucker makes for a very convincing ghost. Encourage your kids to get creative!

7. Go On Vacation
Why not use Halloween as your excuse to get away with your family? By traveling over Halloween you can avoid the extra expense, traffic, and other hassles that typically accompany peak-season travel. Many destinations (such as amusement parks and zoos) offer special Halloween attractions, so you'll be able to make spooky memories you'll treasure forever.
